¿APA Standards?
The APA Standards are the most widely used style for organizing and presenting information in the field of social sciences. They are published in a manual that provides guidelines on how to format a scientific article. The goal is to standardize academic texts. Standardization is achieved through a set of editorial rules that define everything from paper sizes and margins to header formats, appendices, and more.
APA Standards 2019
7th (seventh) edition
The rules of the American Psychological Association (APA) are currently one of the most recognized standards for the dissemination of scientific and academic knowledge. Since 1919, when the first draft of the rules was released, APA has transformed into an extensive manual for the dissemination of scientific work in all areas of knowledge. The APA Manual 2019 is also regarded as an authority when it comes to rules for the creation, presentation, formatting, citation, and referencing of academic work. The latest edition is the seventh version, which we can expect to be definitive, as the association has no plans to release a new edition. Now, we share with you this review of the most prominent and recent aspects of the APA Manual, 7th edition.
Writing With Clearness and Precision
The APA Manual does not rigorously regulate the content of an academic work; however, it emphasizes the efficient communication of ideas and concepts. The APA 2019 Rules encourage the elimination of redundancies, vagueness, and generalities that hinder understanding. The appropriate length of a text is strictly necessary to convey what needs to be said.
FORMAT FOR PRESENTING WORK
-
Paper Size: In some countries, A4 paper is common, but beware! The recommended paper size by APA is letter size.
-
Margins: Margins should be one inch, which corresponds to 2.54 cm. These are the standard Word margins; however, we recommend verifying that the margins are set correctly.
-
Font Type and Size: The sixth edition recommends using Times New Roman, 12-point font, but the APA 7th edition makes several recommendations regarding fonts and sizes that can be used in documents.
-
Header: The 7th edition of the APA standard includes changes in titles. The words "Short Title" have been eliminated. For student papers, the page header consists solely of the page number aligned to the right. In professional documents, page headers consist of a page number aligned to the right and a header aligned to the left.
-
Titles and Subtitles: Another change in the 7th edition of the APA standard is the level of titles and subtitles.
-
Line Spacing: Double spacing should be used throughout the document. However, there may be exceptions to line spacing. Also, use a hanging indent of 1.27 cm (0.5 inches) for references.
-
Paragraph Alignment: APA standards instruct students to use left alignment.
